Five Fab Uses for Coconut Oil – and Why it Works!

It’s no secret that the world went (coco)nuts for coconut oil. Often people are quick to try and burst the hype bubble around jack-of-all-trades products, but with coconut oil, it simply can’t be done. This little natural powerhouse has your beauty routine covered, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes (and the pits of your arms, as a key ingredient in Earthlette’s Pit Paste).

But what coconut oil should I use? And how??

There are a lot of different products out there, and it can get a little overwhelming. When choosing your coconut oil, natural is the way to go. Pure, extra virgin raw coconut oil is your best bet (found in many health and wholefood stores) as it is totally organic and gentler on your hair and scalp. You can absolutely use the coconut oil found in supermarkets, just keep an eye on the ingredient list!

But what is it good for exactly? Well…

  1. Get frizzy with It – Hair treatment

If you suffer from dry, frizzy hair, coconut oil might by the hair blessing you’ve been looking for. The natural fatty acids help to soften your hair and keep all that moisture trapped inside. The perfect rejuvenating hair mask, rub a small amount from roots to ends, leave it in for at least 15 minutes (overnight if you’re feeling bold, just remember to wrap your hair so it doesn’t wind up all over your pillow!) and then wash it out. A great scalp moisturiser as well, it’s got all your hair bases covered.

  1. Keep that smile sun safe – Natural SPF lip balm

The skin is your largest organ, and the lips are the most sensitive part, typically most exposed to the elements. We all want to keep our pout soft as a baby’s behind, and coconut oil is the perfect natural lip balm to do just that, with the added bonus of built-in SPF protection. Plus, the natural antioxidants from the Vitamin E further protect your lips from damage while you’re out and about. It’s super moisturising, and those handy fatty acids also have natural antimicrobial and antibacterial properties to keep your lips happy and healthy. Honestly, what can’t this stuff do?

  1. Nailing it – Nourishing those fingers and toes

The natural moisturising, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties of coconut oil make it great for keeping your toes and fingertips in tip-top shape. The essential amino acids, and lauric and caprylic acid help to support the barrier function of your skin, and maintain your skin’s natural flora (aka the good bugs).

Massage it into your cuticles after a shower and you’ll be ready to put your best foot forward every day of the week. Don’t limit yourself to your extremities though, it’s also a great moisturiser for your face and the rest of your body.

  1. Silky smooth legs – Shaving balm

While it’s good as an all-over body moisturiser, coconut oil makes the perfect balm to keep those legs silky smooth post-shave. Just spread a thin layer of coconut oil onto your legs before shaving to trap that moisture in and leave your legs feeling hydrated, healthy, and razor burn free. You can thank the generous amounts of Vitamin E for that.

  1. Fresh face feels – Makeup remover

Sick of your transformation to a panda every time you go to take off your eye makeup? Switch to coconut oil for a nourishing, natural make up remover. 100% free from synthetic chemicals, coconut oil won’t irritate sensitive skin or eyes. But it’s an oil! Will it make me break out?

Coconut oil, like all oils, is comedogenic (pore blocking). But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it, but rather use it in moderation, just like everything else. If you’re prone to facial blemishes, it might not be the best choice for a facial moisturiser, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of its many other fantastic uses!
